To most of us, the fashion world seems like a realm of its own – A daunting empire of fashion worshippers who wear no less than Louboutins, and have conversations laced with French terms that sound alien to us ordinary muggles. And when we combine film with fashion, it does so much more than just entertain – The silver screen has been an education in the world of style.
Films have continued to capture our imagination, from when we were kids to the time we reached our adulthood.
These fashion enriched movies are an escape from the real world, and create the ultimate in wardrobe fantasies.
The following motion pictures are an essential watch for style education. Put on your PJs, grab a bowl of popcorn and hit play.
One: Clueless (1995)
This movie has everything a fashion lover could ask for. Matchy-matchy suits, knee-length socks, fluffy pens and interactive walk-in closets, the perfect ode to the 90’s fashion trends. The clothes alone make the flick a generational classic. So many of the outfits donned by the leading character Cher still look so current 22 years later. Fun fact: There were 53 different kinds of plaids used in the movie, seven of which were worn by Cher alone, and twelve by other major characters!
I for one can never tire of this movie – it gives me major #outfitgoals every single time!
Two: The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
A list of fashion films without the quintessential The Devil Wears Prada would not be a list at all. This movie takes us to the very inside and unveils what it is really like to be a part of the frenzy behind a high fashion magazine. Meryl Streep plays an iconic magazine editor, a role that is said to be inspired by the famous Anna Wintour of Vogue. We watch in awe, the transformation of Anne Hathaway, as she goes from frumpy to fabulous. This flick proved that loving fashion and being smart are not mutually exclusive. A mandatory watch for your girls’ night in.
Three: Pretty Woman (1990)
This romantic comedy changed every fashionista’s life forever. For one thing, Julia Robert’s smile is enough to jolt the senses. For another, the movie with its stellar choice of fashion proved that women can be sexy, confident and classy all at the same time. It might be the only movie in history that turns prostitution in a romantic fairy tale, but despite the far-fetched scenario, Pretty Woman is the movie that turned Julia Roberts into a star. No matter what you think of the movie, one cannot argue that Robert’s range of clothing was quite spectacular. Specially that cute polka dot dress, instant charmer!
