George Papanikolas is one of the most sought after hairstylists in California. On his recent visit to Dubai, UAE, we got the chance to meet him and he was nice enough to answer some questions for us. His work has been featured in many leading magazines and he is famous amongst  younger Hollywood celebrities.

The Blush Works: Tell us about yourself and what made you want to become a hairstylist?

George: I’m an LA native. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California. My family is Greek originally. I started doing hair 13 years ago, this was my second career. I went to school and had a corporate job. But I always had a passion for doing hair. When I was 27, I quit my job and ended up apprenticing some of the top hairstylists in the industry.

TBW: What is your signature style?

George: It would have to be the balayage. I adapted to social media reay fast which helped in giving my career a boost.

TBW: What are some of the challenges you face working as a hairstylist?

George: Working in Hollywood with a lot of celebrities is always challenging, because its not just me and the celebrity making all the decisions. Its also the whole production company and a lot of times what they want is not very realistic. For example somebody would want to go from really dark hair to blonde tomorrow, and its not something impossible, it can be done but its a gradual process. It can take several months because if we don’t want to destroy the client’s hair.

TBW: What do you do when a client is not happy with the results?

George: When it comes to hair, what we do is always fixable. The important part is to have good consultation from the beginning and set a realistic expectation and you’ll never disappoint a client.

TBW: What advice would you give to aspiring hairstylists?

George: Education is very important. Part of why I’m successful is becuase I worked and learned from the top stylists in the busniness. They were successful because they had the knowledge and skill set. Since everything is accessible online now, it is easier to learn. You can Google my name and look at my techniques and practice them. You don’t necessarily need to work under me to get that exposure anymore.

The thing with social media is that you can’t do simple hair anymore. You constantly have to keep up with trends because they change so fast that you have to keep changing and adding more to what you hace learned.
